Week #5: Workout

I had a 1 hour session of yoga flow. I mainly concentrated my routine on the downward facing dog, half standing fold, the plank, lunge. I finished with the child positon and laying down completely to cool off.

Follow-up questions

1.What are the ACSM guidelines for effective cardiovascular training (cardio)?

Any good cardiovascular training has to have the following components: warm-up, conditioning and cool-down. The warm-up and cool-down should take 5-15 minutes of the training. The frequency of the workouts should be 3-5 days a week and each workout should range between 20-60 continuous or intermittent minutes. There are 3 stages of cardiovascular training: Initial, improvement and maintenance, which follows a recommended training and exercise frequency, as well as intensity and duration.

2. How long and how intense should a session be for health benefits?

The ACSM guidelines for adults are of 2 hours and 30 minutes to 5 hours per week of moderate physical activity. It has a intensity of about 60% to 70% of the max heart rate.

3. Give an example of something that counts as cardio and something that doesn’t(but some people might think it does)?

Running or cycling are common exercises that fit the cardiovascular training guidelines. Leisure walking doesn’t meet the heart rate guideline and therefore would not count as a true cardio workout. Only walking at a pace enough to bring up your heart rate will offer the health and calorie-burning benefits of “cardio” exercise.

4. How many glasses of water should you drink each day?

It is recommended to drink about eight 8-ounces, which is about 2 liters of water for a healthy adult.

5. What is progressive overload and how does it work?

Progressive overload is a system that is based on the increase of stress placed upon the body during the physical training. In order to achieve good results, the muscles must be placed under stress in such a way that triggers the body’s natural, adaptive response. Furthermore, it stimulates the blood flow through the body and consequently triggers the development of stronger bones and ligaments in the body.

Week #4 questions

  1. What type of workouts and physical activities do you like?

These first weeks made me think a bit more about the physical activities that I like and that I have a tendency to gravity towards more. First of all, I realized that I love cardiovascular workouts such as; running, spinning, stair master. I also enjoy yoga and meditation as an regular cooling down activity.

2. Do you prefer going to the gym or working out at home?

I actually prefer both; working out at home when I’m busy and at the gym when I have time. I love attending classes at the gym, because I only have a few weights, resistance bands and my yoga mat. However, having the option to workout at home prevents slacking off and it forces to be fully committed. Weights, yoga, biking, or running; what could you see yourself doing for the
remaining weeks of this program?

3. Weights, yoga, biking, or running; what could you see yourself doing for the
remaining weeks of this program?

For the remaining weeks of this program, I see myself following a good yoga program at home for focus and to improve my flexibility. I also want to go to my regular spinning classes and follow a HIIT workout during the week.

4. What could you see yourself doing as exercise for the remainder of your life?

I really see myself following a program combining both yoga and spinning. I would see myself working out at a high intensity by spinning and finishing it off with a yoga flow program.

Blog post week #4: Another day, another spinning class

What’s their schedule like and how much does it cost?

I visited gold’s gym which is a 24 hour gym. https://www.goldsgymvillestlaurent.com/fr/golds-gym-ville-st-laurent-gymnase-montreal

What class did you attend and with whom?

I attended a spinning class with Nayla in the spinning studio.

How did you feel before, during, and after?

Weirdly enough, I woke up feeling energized and I was ready to push myself in the spinning class. About halfway through the workout, I was starting to feel a little exhausted but I quickly refocused and I was able to push through the last sprints we had to do.

What did you learn, like, and dislike?

I learnt a lot during the spinning class I attended. Firstly, I realized that if you want real results you have to be committed to your fitness journey. As the weeks progressed, I felt better in the spinning classes and I was able to catch up faster than I used to at the beginning. This improvement is only after a few week, so I can’t imagine how I will feel in a few weeks from now. I love the energy boost I get from working out and I look forward to it every time. It has slowly become my favourite moment of my day.

Were you glad you went and would you recommend it to a friend?

I would totally recommend it to a close friend or member of the family, if they want to move and implement a bit of energy in their day.

Week #3: Questions

What would you personally like to improve upon or gain from an exercise program?

First of all, I would love to enjoy myself when I workout, which will ultimately lead to integrating workouts or classes into my regular routine and my life. I don’t have a specific goal weight I want to get to, but I want more muscle definition on thighs and abdominal muscles.

List three specific examples of what would motivate you to participate in and stick to a regular exercise routine?

My motivations for maintaining a regular workout routine would be increasing my energy levels when I start my days with a workout. I would also be motivated if I feel an improvement in my confidence levels and my overall mood. A final motivation would be a visual improvement in my body, such as muscle definition and less fat around my lower abdominal muscles.

List three specific barriers or excuses which would prevent you from doing so?

One of the barriers would be a lack of motivation in the morning or whenever I have to go workout. Another barrier would be my busy schedule that is already really tight with school. Finally, another barrier to my workout would be not having time to eat a proper meal before working out and not having the required energy levels to do the exercises.

Week #3: Workout at the gym

What’s their schedule like and how much does it cost?

I visited gold’s gym which is a 24 hour gym. https://www.goldsgymvillestlaurent.com/fr/golds-gym-ville-st-laurent-gymnase-montreal

What class did you attend and with whom?

I did a regular workout in the machine part of the gym (45min cardio alternating between the treadmill and stairmaster).

How did you feel before, during, and after?

Prior to the workout I was feeling under the weather and a bit tired. The workout itself was pretty intense, but I managed to pull through and continue on. After the workout, I felt a rush of energy and I was able to go on with my day without any caffeine, which is a new thing since I have been working out regularly.

What did you learn, like, and dislike?

Every time I workout I learn more about my capabilities and my weakness. What i love about this workout is that it energized me and gave me a confidence boost. What i maybe disliked a little was that I had to push through the initial gloomy and under the weather feeling I had in the beginning.

Were you glad you went and would you recommend it to a friend?

I would totally recommend it to a close friend or member of the family.

Week #2: Spinning class

What’s their schedule like and how much does it cost?

For week two, I decided to go to a spinning class at my gym.The gym I go to is called Gold’s Gym and it’s open 24hr.

Their website is https://www.goldsgymvillestlaurent.com/fr/golds-gym-ville-st-laurent-gymnase-montreal

What class did you attend and with whom?

I attended the 9h00-10h00 spinning class on Sunday with Nayla.

How did you feel before, during, and after?

Before going to the class, I was feeling quite tired and grumpy because I had a ton of things to do for the next day. The actual class was amazing due to the music and the dim lights. I got so into it that I was able to only concentrate on my muscles and my mind. After the class, I was feeling extremely energized and happy. I had the chance to be super productive when I got home, because I got all my frustration out of my body with the intense workout.

What did you learn, like, and dislike?

I learnt how to focus on my muscles and mind during the entire workout. I realized how easy it is to abandon and loose hopes when you don’t focus on your muscles during your workout. I also learnt how to control my breath during the intense parts and how to keep my energy.

Were you glad you went and would you recommend it to a friend?

This blog post forced me to get out of my comfort zone and I think I discovered a new passion for spinning. I am definitely going to start attending these classes on a regular basis and I 100% recommend it to anyone that wants to get more variety in their workout.
